BIRTHDAYS

If today is your big day, happy birthday!

You share a birthday with US rock musician Meg White, US poet Emily Dickinson and Australian soccer player Josip Skoko.

THIS DAY IS FAMOUS FOR

1878 - Ned Kelly gang robs bank at Euroa, Victoria, of 2,000 pounds.

1902 - The original Aswan Dam, built by the British to control the Nile floods, is completed.

2012 - 2Day FM presenters Mel Greig and Michael Christian apologise for a telephone prank linked to the death of British nurse Jacintha Saldanha. They had called the hospital where the Duchess of Cambridge was a patient and been put through to a nurse; Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accuses the international community of "deafening silence" in response to recent vows by the head of the militant group Hamas to fight on until the Jewish state is destroyed.

JOKE OF THE DAY

I bought some rocket salad yesterday, but it went off before I could eat it.

Got another joke? Any tips on what we should be heading out to today? Send it in to merran.reed@fairfaxmedia.com.au

Have a great day,

Merran
