A home for the Bendigo Historical Society

It was truly heart-breaking to see the photo of Jim Evans, president of the Bendigo Historical Society, standing in a yard surrounded by four shipping containers, in last week’s Bendigo Miner. Each of these containers stores the society’s artefacts. Hundreds of towns across Australia have museums. One of the best is at Kyneton; the community effort to bring it to fruition puts Bendigo to shame in its dalliance. Since my return to Bendigo almost three years ago I have followed the fortunes of the Bendigo Historical Society, and feel for it in its need for a secure home. That home does exist. It is Fortuna. I also follow this debate. It is inconceivable that in today’s world, when money is discussed in billions, that a meagre four million dollars cannot be found for the purchase of this amazing edifice.Surely our MPs, councillors, business and professional people and community can find a way to unite these two treasure chests to further glorify this beautiful city.
