Bendigo trams arrive in Auckland

It's been 55 years since a tram last rolled down an Auckland street, but from August, the sound of a tram's gentle rumble will again be a familiar noise in the CBD. This morning two 1920s trams from Melbourne landed on Jellicoe Wharf. They are set to be installed on a 1.5km loop within the Wynyard Quarter, and will run in a 15-minute clockwise circuit along Jellicoe, Halsey, Gaunt and Daldy Streets. Waterfront Auckland chief executive John Dalzell says the trams are expected to be popular with tourists and locals alike. "Everyone's really interested about it. It's amazing how trams galvanise public opinion and support. I think it will be a great addition to the waterfront." For more, see tomorrow's Bendigo Advertiser.
