GIRTON Grammar student Danielle Wilson and Bendigo Senior Secondary student Jordan Ivey have been awarded the inaugural Fernwood Scholarship, established to reward sporting excellence.Bendigo Fernwood Fitness Club established the Fernwood Scholarship to recognise young women excelling in their sport of choice.Awarded to girls moving from year 11 to year 12, the scholarship entitles the recipients to a 12-month membership at the female-only fitness club, including access to cardio, weights and classes. Club manager Nicole Wood said the scholarship aimed to recognise sporting achievement while supporting the community.“Not only do the recipients have to excel in a sport at a state or national level, they also have to contribute back into their school society’’ she said.“It’s about contributing back to the people that have helped them along the way.’’Both recipients of the award, who were selected by their schools, have participated at the top level in their chosen sport, with Danielle representing Victoria in netball and Jordan playing futsal at a state level.Danielle travels to Melbourne twice a week to train with the Victorian jlstate netball team, and hopes the Fernwood Scholarship will help increase her fitness levels.“I know I’m all right at netball, it’s just the fitness side that I need to work on,’’ she said.“Hopefully, after running and doing classes I’ll be able to pick it up a bit.’’Jordan, who hoped to join a gym earlier in the year before realising the cost, has represented Victoria in futsal and continues to star at the Strathdale Soccer Club. The 17-year-old said the scholarship would be a great way to keep fit during year 12.“I’ll get increased fitness out of it,’’ she said.“If I don’t have enough time after school, I can come to the gym during my frees.’’
