GOLDEN Square has landed another key signing for its 2010 Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football League premiership defence in star full-forward Grant Weeks.Weeks booted 124 goals for Heathcote District Football League runners-up Colbinabbin this year, but the 21-year-old has chosen to continue his career in the BFL with the Bulldogs.“When Nick (Carter, coach) told me he was on board with Simon Rosa as his assistant, I saw it as a really good opportunity to play under those guys, and to play full-forward in a team like Golden Square is an opportunity I couldn’t resist,” Weeks said yesterday.“With Golden Square’s midfield their delivery should be really good, but I’m not going there thinking I’m going to kick a heap of goals, I still know I’m going to have to work pretty hard.”Weeks returned to Colbinabbin this year after two seasons with the Bendigo Bombers in the VFL, while he has also played with the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup.His return of 124 goals for the Grasshoppers this year included a club record 16 against Huntly in round 10 and six in the four-point grand final loss to Heathcote.“I probably would have loved to have stayed at Colbinabbin, but being only 21 I felt I had to move on and challenge myself in Bendigo, and it’s my comfort zone out there at Colbo . . . I know everyone, but I definitely loved it back out there.“To kick 120-odd goals and play in a grand final was great, but it obviously would have been great to win it.”With Weeks signing with the Bulldogs, it will help to cover the loss of retired ex-coach Mark Adamson, who kicked 37 goals from full-forward this year.“Golden Square’s three leading goalkickers were in the 40s this year, so I think they’re looking for more of a main focal point, so hopefully, I can kick a few goals for them,” Weeks said. The signing of Weeks follows the Bulldogs securing Peel Thunder pair Simon Rosa and Luke Hammond, who will both strengthen the Bulldogs’ already impressive midfield brigade.Meanwhile, new Golden Square coach Nick Carter says he won’t be trying to lure Nathan Brown to Country Vet Oval should Brown be unsuccessful in reigniting his AFL career. Brown and Carter are close mates who played together at junior level at Golden Square and the Bendigo Pioneers.Brown’s AFL future remains unknown after he was de-listed by Richmond at the end of the 2009 season.Brown has played 219 AFL games - 137 for the Western Bulldogs and 82 for Richmond.“We have joked about him coming back and playing,” Carter said.“But with where Nathan is at at the moment, if he doesn’t get that opportunity with AFL football, which I hope he does because I still believe in the right side he can add value, then I think you will find him get into the media and potentially join that Triple M Saturday show, which would probably rule him out of playing football.”
