MULTI-TALENTED sporting star Karley Hynes has added selection in the Australian 17-and-under netball squad to her long list of recent accolades. The goaler was named in the 20-member squad after her outstanding performance at the Netball Australia national championships in Canberra this month. Her Victorian team finished runners-up at the tournament, going down 21-23 to South Australia in a nail-biting grand final. The former Bendigo girl played in eight of the Vics’ nine matches across the carnival, shooting 115 goals from 141 attempts at an accuracy of 81.5 per cent.It is the second time Hynes has made an Australian netball team, having been chosen in a national schoolgirls side in 2007.She also represented her country in beach volleyball at the Olympic Youth Festival in Sydney in February, and toured Asia with the national junior and youth indoor volleyball teams last year.Hynes will head to the Australian Institute of Sport in July for a netball training camp, under the watchful eye of Australian Diamonds coach Norma Plummer and national 21-and-under coach Simone McKinnis. She was one of six Victorians to make the prestigious 17-and-under squad.Hynes grew up in Maiden Gully but moved to Melbourne this year and is studying Year 11 at Maribyrnong Secondary College, which has a specialised sports program for elite athletes. The teenager plays for the Yarra Valley Grammar Ariels in the Victorian Netball League. She is following the footsteps of another ex-Bendigo star, Caitlin Thwaites, who has represented Australia on both the netball and volleyball courts and is a star goaler for Melbourne Vixens in the ANZ Championships.
