Bendigo’s Rusty Hickman will make his much anticipated World Series Sprintcars debut tonight at the season opener held at Murray Bridge Speedway.
Hickman is not at all phased by the star-studded WSS field which includes champion driver Kerry Madsen.
“None of them intimidate me,” Hickman said.
“There aren’t any drivers in the series I haven’t raced before.”
In the lead-up to tonight Hickman has been racing in Victorian sprintcar events, where he has been able to refine his skills and build confidence as a racer.
Hickman is following in the footsteps of his father Darren, who himself is a seasoned sprintcar racer.
“The year has been a build-up to this event and once the season starts it’s going to be a roller coaster as we’ve committed to 10 races Australia wide,” Darren Hickman said.
Darren could not be any prouder of his son, describing his racing ability as “raw talent”, but at times it can be nerve-wracking.
“It’s great when he’s out front, but when he’s one inch from the fence with the motor going at 8500 RPM, mum is not too keen on it,” he laughed.
“For some guys it takes years to learn the art of racing sprintcars, but he picked it up naturally and we will now wait to see where the journey ends.”
