A 31-year-old building, which once housed Oscar Ws Wharfside Restaurant, is being demolished to make way for the 65-metre retaining wall.
The wall will be behind the part of the bank destabilised after the 2016 floods.

A small section of old retaining wall will remain, as it is on the State Heritage Register.
The project comes at a cost of $920,000 to Campaspe Shire Council.
The council had applied for funding under the National Disaster Financial Assistance Fund, but was unsuccessful.
Earlier this year, mayor Adrian Weston said that to not go ahead with the work would leave the area at risk of damage, collapse or failure.
Works are expected to be completed by early next year.
