Director of strategy and growth Bernie O’Sullivan said the COGB encouraged and supported the use of hybrid vehicles.
“More and more people are using plug-in and hybrid vehicles, and seeking more sustainable modes of transport,” Mr O’Sullivan said.
“Placing these outlets around our high use car parks makes sense and we hope it will support plug-in hybrid vehicle users in our community.”
The City already has six electric bikes in its fleet.
The popularity of the bike fleet has steadily increased over time with the average length of each trip now between 3km-4km and in total travelled more than 6,600 kilometers since 2013.
Mr O’Sullivan said it was part of the city’s effort to meet greenhouse gas emission targets with the transition of the fleet to hybrid or fully electric vehicles.
“Transitioning the City’s fleet to hybrid or fully electric vehicles, as well as using bikes for short trips will help to meet our greenhouse gas emission reduction targets as well,” Mr O’Sullivan said.
“We need to do everything possible to meet our emissions target and lead the uptake of a range of sustainable transport methods.”
Hybrid vehicles work by using a combination of an electric and internal combustion engine.
Some models have various settings which allow the driver to switch between the different power supplies depending on the amount of electricity in the battery or fuel present in the vehicle.
The addition of public hybrid vehicle charge points is now becoming a norm throughout Bendigo as there are now numerous locations throughout the city.
There are plugs for various hybrid models located at the Golden Square Motor Inn, City Centre Motel Bendigo, The Good Loaf Bakery & Cafe, Kennington Village Shopping Centre and The Bendigo Exhibition Centre.
As part of the addition of the hybrid-plug in car to the COGB fleet, two new public charge points have also been installed at the Hargreaves Street multi-storey car park and the Edwards Street multi-storey car park.
All of the publicly registered plug-in charge points in the City of Greater Bendigo are listed on the website www.plugshare.com.
