After leading Calivil United to the Loddon Valley FNL flag in 2017, Curnow will start a second stint with the reigning BFNL premiers having been co-coach of the Storm in 2016.
Curnow said it was a tough decision to leave the Demons.
"I love the club and have great respect for everyone there,'' Curnow said on Monday.
"I have a new job in Strathfieldsaye, I'm building a house in Strathfieldsaye and I'm planning a wedding. With no coaching commitments and less travel I have more time on my hands. It just made sense to play footy at Strathfieldsaye.
"I was honest with Calivil about my situation. Calivil is my family club... so it's hard to leave, but I'm sure I'll go back there to play footy."
Curnow kicked 86 goals in 19 games for Calivil last year, including three in the grand final win over Bridgewater.
In 2016 he spent most of the season with the Storm in defence before a hamstring injury ended his season just prior to the finals series.
With Harry Conway and Jake Hall departing Storm's premiership squad, Curnow looks set to play as a key forward in 2018 alongside reigning Michelsen Medalist Lachlan Sharp and highly-rated former Seymour forward Hugh Robertson.
Calivil United premiership coach Anthony Dennis declined to comment on Curnow's departure.
Strathfieldsaye opens its premiership defence with a gran final re-match against Eaglehawk at Canterbury Park on April 14.
The Storm will unveil their premiership flag before the twilight game against Gisborne in round two.
