Rob McIntyre from the GDCA has been named as a finalist for the category of State Government of Victoria Service to Victorian Community Sport and Recreation.
Sports Focus sports project coordinator Tamarra Ferguson said Sports Focus nominated Mr McIntyre because of his long history and involvement within community sport.
“We read through the Victorian Sport Awards nomination process and thought Rob fit into the category perfectly,” Mrs Ferguson said.
“He has been working within community sport for over 35 years, which in itself is quite the achievement.”
“The amount of time and effort he has put into making sure participation is open for everybody. Not only males but females and juniors, we think his work is fantastic.”
Mr McIntyre was also awarded by Sports Focus as Administrator of the Year at their annual awards held in November 2017.
Mr McIntyre said he had played and coached cricket for a long time and it was the natural progression to be involved in sport administration.
“I want to put back something into the sport and community that has supported me throughout my playing years,” Mr McIntyre said.
Mr McIntyre said he was surprised when he received the call that informed him that he had been named as a finalist for the awards.
“There’s such a large amount of nominees, to be selected and to be one of the last four... I was surprised but also very proud that I can represent not only the sport of cricket but the region,” Mr McIntyre said.
Mrs Ferguson said Mr McIntyre had influenced an increase in participation within community sport.
“He has put in a lot of hard work and effort into making sure there was a first full girl’s competition for GDCA that began at the start of this season,” Mrs Ferguson said.
“Also his huge drive for junior participation, it’s a huge thing within cricket, it’s fantastic.”
Other highlights of Mr McIntyre’s achievements include growing the amount of clubs within the GDCA from 15 to 22 and rearranging the structure of the association’s management to improve governance practices.
“Our work focuses on inclusion within sport and at the moment we are definitely focusing on gender equality, not only participation but, we like to see sporting clubs be more open to everyone in general,” Mrs Ferguson said.
“It’s vitally important to have the movers and shakers, like Rob, that want to do the hard work now to see a benefit in the future.”
“We wish Rob all the very best and we congratulate him on all of his achievements he has received to date and look forward to seeing what he has planned for the future of sport within his community.”
The 2017 Victorian Sport Awards will be held on Wednesday March 14 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
