Herbert fired a closing round 71 in last week’s Singapore Open to finish in a tie for eighth position behind Spanish champion Sergio Garcia.
But it was enough to place the 22-year-old, who finished -6, among the leading four players, not already exempt, to qualify for the Open at historic Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland in July.
Neangar Park Golf Club manager Nicholas Rix said everyone at his home club was excited for Herbert.
“It’s just fantastic for golf in Bendigo as well as Neangar Park,” he said.
“He’s playing fantastic at the moment and we are all hoping he goes over there and shoots the lights out.”
It will not be Herbert’s first time at Carnoustie.
The world number 274 previously played the Amateur Championship there in 2015.
His open qualification follows a consistent Australian summer, which included top 10 finishes at the Australian Open (tied sixth) and PGA (tied seventh).
Neangar Park PGA professional Eric Hendrix said Herbert had been a major talking point at the club on Monday.
“It’s something you don’t see often, a club-level player go right through the system – to get to a major is unbelievable,” he said.
“He’s definitely developed a lot in the last 12 months.”
Hendrix has gotten a close-up look at Herbert during a few rounds together at Neangar Park and continues to be impressed with his development.
“He’s a fantastic ball-striker, very long off the tee, which is what you need to be these days to be competitive,” he said.
“He’s got every facet of the game – length, very accurate, his short game is fantastic and really putts well, which is what a lot of the professionals lack these days.
“He’s a brilliant golfer. And he’s got a no-fear attitude.”
Herbert is one of eight Australians already confirmed for the Open.
Others are fellow young-gun Cameron Davis, world No. 12 Marc Leishman, Jason Day, Adam Scott, Matt Jones, Brett Rumform and 1991 winner Ian Baker-Finch .
