Heathcote sub-branch president Miles Humphrey said the backdoor of the RSL had been kicked in sometime over the weekend.
Mr Humphrey said the person or persons who broke in appeared to be looking for “whatever was inside” the cupboards they had forced themselves into.
“We have taken stock of what went missing. Luckily, it was not much as we do not keep a lot in there,” he said.
Mr Humphrey said the incident was disappointing.
“We have a traditional sub-branch that runs off of charitable events and donations. So anything they wanted to steal was based off of volunteers’ hard work,” he said.
“It’s a shame some people think it is acceptable behavior.”
Sub-branch members would sit down with City of Greater Bendigo representatives in the next few days to consider any additional security improvements at the site.
“The council has been brilliant in their response. Already we have had a carpenter and a locksmith out on site to fix the damage. We now have a beefier lock-system,” Mr Humphrey said.
Police were looking into the break-in. Anyone with information was urged to contact the Heathcote police station.
