Hayes clocked a time of 4:23.73 in the 1500m which broke the centre’s open record.
The twilight meet at the La Trobe University Bendigo athletics complex included superb feats by Bendigo Harriers’ Brett Gilligan in the 100m, and South Bendigo’s Joan Self at javelin.
Gilligan won the second of the 100m heats in time of 11.70 seconds which broke the centre’s record for the 40-plus class.
Self’s mark of 18.59m at javelin is a new centre record for the 60-plus division.
There were many outstanding performances in the 11 th round of Athletics Victoria’s shield competition.
Athletes were not only vying for shield points, but also used the meet to tune-up for the Victoria Country titles at Ballarat on the Australia Day weekend.
Eaglehawk’s Asher Jones was in hot form as he won the 100m in 11.32, and Niah Langtree won the
100m in 12.94, and 400m in 1:01.44.
South Bendigo’s Jesse Sullivan was fastest in the 400m in 53.54.
Just minutes after racing to second place in the 2000m steeplechase, Eaglehawk’s Juancho Mackenzie won the second of the 400m heats in 1:00.73.
The in-form Kathy Heagney from Eaglehawk followed up her success in the previous weekend’s Australian Masters multi-event titles by winning her heats of the 100m and 400m.
University’s Kye Jenkyn marked his return to the track by winning the 1500m in 4:14.12 ahead of Bendigo Harriers’ Jamie Cook, 4:15.74, and University’s rising star Wil McCaig, 4:21.09.
The 2000m steeplechase was a great test for all nine competitors.
South Bendigo’s Darcy Nelson reigned supreme in 7:39.03.
Winners in the walks were Eaglehawk’s Ebony Whiley, 1500m, and South Bendigo’s Annette Curtis, 3000m.
At the long jump action, Kyle Murphy from Bendigo Harriers reached a mark of 6.58m, and clubmate Monique Gavriliadis leapt 4.99m to win the women’s event.
Eaglehawk’s Lachlan Start and University’s Anthony Messerle had a great duel at javelin.
Start’s best of 44.03 metres clinched victory from Messerle on 42.20m.
South Bendigo’s Emma Berg achieved another double – 37.55m at javelin, and 13.86m at shot put.
Mackenzie Cooper from Bendigo Harriers put the shot to 11.42m as Asher Jones was runner-up on 11.37m.
