The fire started about 1.30pm when a driver pulled over on the side of the highway near Hokins Road when their car stopped working.
An overheated car part ignited grassland and wind helped it to spread, according to Castlemaine police.
Six CFA vehicles attended the scene and extinguished the fire by just after 2pm. There was no damage to property.
Traffic was restricted to one lane in both directions and police directed traffic through the area.
