“I feel for them. Some people are so worried when they call us that they might owe money,” Senior Sergeant O’Niell said.
She had listened to one message left on a voicemail account and the scam appeared to start with an automated message urging intended victims to call a phone number.
Senior Sergeant O’Niell said Victoria Police did not make calls to collect tax debts on behalf of the tax office.
“This is the first scam I’ve come across in which someone has said that they are from the police. Usually scammers say they are from the tax office,” she said.
