While accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award, Pink – real name Alecia Moore – told a story about her daughter.
“I was driving my daughter to school who said ‘I’m ugliest girl I know, I look like a boy with long hair’,” Pink said.
Rather than yell and rant about why her daughter was wrong, Pink said she said nothing and went home and made a power point presentation.
“In that presentation were androgynous rockstars and artists who live their truth,” she said.
“(They are) probably made fun of every day of their life and they carry on and wave their flag and inspire the rest of us.
“People like Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Annie Lennox, Prince, Janis Joplin, George Michael, Elton John. So many artists.”
Pink rounded out her speech by reminding people to encourage change.
“We don’t change. We take the gravel in the shell and make a pearl. And we help others change so they can see all kinds of beauty,” she said.
