Halfway through the third quarter the plucky Roos trailed the Tigers by just four points at Dower Park.

To that stage the Roos had worked hard to restrict the usually free-scoring Kyneton to just five goals through the 70 minutes of game time as the Tigers led 5.6 to 5.2.

However, the last 50 minutes of the game were dominated by the visiting Tigers, who eased away to win 13.14 (92) to 6.4 (40) and tick another box in pursuit of their third BFNL finals appearance in a row.

From the 14-minute mark of the third quarter to the final siren, the Tigers outscored the Roos 8.8 to 1.2.

While the final margin blew out to 52 points, there were promising signs early for the Roos, who dished it right up to the Tigers.

The Roos appeared to catch the Tigers off guard with their pressure at the contest as Kyneton played the first quarter like a team simply expecting to turn up to Dower Park, do what it had to do and bank four points.

The Tigers were sloppy with their entries inside 50 and the Kangaroo Flat defence cleared the ball with ease as the Roos went into quarter-time leading by five points, 2.1 to 1.2, with prime midfielder Jonathan Lanyon having amassed plenty of first-term possession.

The Tigers lifted in the second quarter following a quarter-time spray from coach Luke Beattie, adding 4.1 to 2.1, with the last two of those goals coming late in the term from Mitch Scholard and Rhys Magin courtesy of a 50m penalty to give the visitors a nine-point break at the main break, 5.5 to 4.2.

The Roos kicked the first goal of the third quarter through Dylan Klemm to bring the margin back under a kick, but as the game wore on, the class of the Tigers stood out, while the young Roos were unable to maintain their intensity.

The Tigers kicking eight of the last nine goals of the game started with a burst of three in three minutes during the third term through Magin, Max O’Sullivan and Scholard that set the pattern for the remainder of the match.

The best for the Tigers featured three of their midfield brigade in Magin (two goals), captain Josh Govan and O’Sullivan (two goals).

“To Kangaroo Flat’s credit, they were impressive with the pressure and intensity they applied in the first half and forced us on the back foot,” Beattie said.

“But we got on top around the stoppages in the second half and when you win it at the coalface it makes it hard for teams to beat you.”

Gun forward Ben Weightman finished with four goals for the Tigers – and missed another four – while Scholard kicked three.

Down the other end, youngster Klemm showed plenty of promising signs as a key forward of the future for the Roos.

Klemm – a stylish left-footer with strong hands – kicked three of Kangaroo Flat’s six goals, including the Roos’ only two after half-time.
