The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for districts throughout the state, including North Central, for damaging winds averaging between 60 and 70 km/h.
Wind gusts could also reach up to 100 km/h in elevated parts of the western and central districts on Sunday morning.
A strong cold front will cross the southwest on Saturday morning and extend across the state, bringing the strong winds.
BOM duty forecaster Stephen King said the winds would last throughout Saturday.
“Expect the windiest day this winter,” he said.
“We are expecting the winds to strengthen early Saturday morning in the western and central districts, and that’ll reach the eastern parts of Victoria by the afternoon.
“Generally we are expecting damaging winds of 60 to 70 km/h with gusts up to about 100 km/h and that includes the Melbourne area.
“We’ll see the winds ease from the west during the afternoon and then hopefully easing completely throughout the state by Sunday morning.”
Temperatures will also be unseasonably warm for winter. Mildura is expecting a top of 27 for Saturday, and Bendigo will reach 19.
But Mr King said the strong winds mean it’s unlikely anyone will notice the warmer weather.
