The 18-year-old Preston man’s driving was first reported to police by a member of the public in Macedon and he was eventually stopped by police in Elphinstone at about 2.30pm.
Police allege he reached a maximum speed of 218 km/h.
Leading senior constable Brett Magrath of the Macedon Ranges highway patrol said police charged the man with speeding and reckless conduct endangering life.
He said the probationary driver had held his licence for just three months at the time and was bailed to appear at the Kyneton Magistrates’ Court next month.
His passenger, a 20-year-old Heidelberg man, assisted police with their inquiries but was not charged.
Leading Senior Constable Magrath said the police air wing assisted in the pursuit, allowing highway patrol members to position themselves in front of the Black BMW and pull the driver over.
“We had the police air wing in the area and they followed him pretty much from the first call and co-ordinated [for police] to get in front of him and be in a position to intercept,” he said.
“There was a pursuit, but he slowed down with us behind and he decided to stop.”
No one was injured but Leading Senior Constable Magrath said the consequences of driving at such speeds could have been far worse.
“That speed is just absolutely ridiculous, I’d hate to see something happen at that speed,” he said.
