Revealing Identity will open on June 24 but La Trobe Art Institute senior curator Kent Wilson is spending this week hanging the exhibition.
“We unwrapped it all on Tuesday and laid it out as we get everything in place,” he said.
“We have about 8000 artworks in our collection so to pick the right selection for this space has been quite an effort. The fun part is figuring out how these different types of artwork sit together.”
Melbourne artist Dale Hickey features in the exhibition as does Grace Cossington Smith, Charles Blackman and Fred Williams.
“Dale Hickey is a favourite for everybody and there is a Fred Williams sketch from when he was 25 years old,” Dr Wilson said.
“The collection has evolved over years. A lot of works by artists are from the early or middle parts of their career, so it is nice as they get more established that we have those early works.”
Revealing Identity is on at Bendigo Art Gallery from June 24 to September 3.
