South Bendigo’s continued improvement and three standout individual performances were the highlights of round five of the BFNL.
South Bendigo sits on top of the BFNL ladder in the seniors, reserves and under-18s – a position the club has rarely been in this deep in a season since the club’s halcyon days of the early 1990s.
The Bloods moved to the top of the senior ladder after they scored a thrilling two-point win over Kyneton at Harry Trott Oval on Saturday.
The Bloods overcame the loss of star forward Kaiden Antonowicz (ankle) to inflict the Tigers’ first loss of the season.
The victory sets up a tantalising clash with old foe Sandhurst at the QEO next Saturday.
Adam Baird, Lachlan Sharp and Andrew Collins put on A-grade performances to lead their teams to victory.
Baird had 46 possessions and kicked four goals in Golden Square’s 73-point win over Gisborne at Wade Street.
Sharp kicked a career-high 14 goals as Strathfieldsaye thumped Maryborough by 195 points. Sharp’s 14-goal haul was the catalyst for the Storm kicking their highest total in club history – 32.19 (211).
Sandhurst’s Collins was at his silky best with four goals from the midfield and a swag of classy touches in the Dragons’ 27-point win over Eaglehawk at the QEO.
The negative for the Dragons was injuries to skipper Blair Holmes (calf) and forward Mitch Dole (hamstring). Both players will be sidelined for three matches.
In the final game of the round, Kangaroo Flat continued Castlemaine’s woeful run, with the Roos winning by 87 points at Dower Park.
First gamer Lochlan Dhurrkay kicked three goals in a best on ground performance for the Roos.
