ABOUT 580 people volunteer for the City of Greater Bendigo, and the council has shown its appreciation for their work with a morning tea.
The council’s volunteers are among the millions being celebrated across the country this week for National Volunteer Week.
“They are just a strong part of the fabric of Greater Bendigo and we appreciate them very much,” mayor Margaret O’Rourke said.
Members of Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail were among the volunteers who enjoyed Thursday morning’s event.
The group fundraises to provide additional amenities along the O’Keefe Rail Trail and acts as an advisory body on rail trail development.
Les Lewis said the members – many of whom were retired professionals – volunteered because when they finished work, they did not simply “turn the key off”, and had a lot of expertise and skills to bring to the table.
Other volunteers for the council help in a wide range of areas, from social support and community services to the arts and tourism
