Senior Sergeant Ian Brooks, from Bendigo Highway Patrol, said a police unit allegedly recorded a blue BMW speeding on the Midland Highway at Epsom shortly before 9.15pm Saturday.
Senior Sergeant Brooks said the unit began to follow the car towards Epsom and shortly afterwards the car collided with a power pole at the intersection of the Midland Highway and Ligar Street in Huntly.
The driver of the car, a 27-year-old Eaglehawk man, escaped uninjured.
Senior Sergeant Brooks said the man was taken to Bendigo police station and charged with offences including reckless conduct endangering life, excessive speed, and driving at a speed and manner dangerous.
He said the man would also undergo a mental health assessment.
The man will face Bendigo Magistrates’ Court in June.
The collision resulted in a widespread power outage that affected more than 2800 customers across a significant area of Bendigo.
Powercor’s outage map suggested the affected area also extended as far north as Goornong, east towards Toolleen and Colbinabbin, and south around Mandurang and Sedgwick.
