Bendigo's emergency services called to house fire after explosions rock street

EMERGENCY services have attended a house fire in Bright Street, California Gully this afternoon.

Neighbours reported hearing “a lot of explosions” and seeing a window blow out about 4.30pm before the fire took hold.

My wife said ‘Can you smell something burning? Have you left something on the stove?’ and I said ‘No, it might be outside the door’,” one man said.

“Just as I opened the door – there was no flames, it was just smoke – the window blew out and that started it.

“It just went bang.”

The neighbour said he heard a dozen to a dozen and a half explosions but did not know what started the fire.

“I thought it was LPG tanks or something like that and being a shooter I thought ‘That sounds like shells going off’,” he said.
