Designed by Bendigo company Switched, the Bendigo Foodshare Million Meals app is a game that sees the player catch falling food to help serve up one million meals.
The game costs $2.99 on iTunes or Android with proceeds going to the Million Meals in March campaign.
Switched co-owners Lindsey and Tim Myers said the wanted to support Bendigo Foodshare after seeing the work they did in the community.
“We did a presentation at a marketing meet and Bendigo Foodshare won a prize to work with us. They cashed that in and we developed their website and this app,” Lindsey said.
“It shocks us that some people in the community can’t get enough food. It’s not easy to register that there's people that have nothing.”
Bendigo Foodshare manager Steve Coles said the digital app would appeal to all markets.
“Switched have done a great job getting to a younger target market for us,” he said.
“There is a lot more awareness for Million Meals in March this year.
“We have more exposure from large corporations and are well on track to meet that target of $63,000 for the month.”
Lindsey said it was also a chase to study if digital apps could help community campaigns.
“We we're keen to see if an app could do something for a community campaign, so it's a bit of a case study for us as well. It appeals to a new market of younger people,” she said.
The Bendigo Foodshare Million Meals app took Lindsey and Tim a weekend to design and create.
“We had two days where we just powered through it. We already had the idea of how it would function and prototyped it over a weekend,” Tim said.
“It's a modern day way of tin rattling, where we ask for a small bit of money and people get the app.
“Hopefully, we can get a few downloads and raise some money.”
