After finishing in the top 10 at last week’s Victorian Open, Herbert fired a bogey-free five-under par 67 at Lake Karrinyup on Thursday to be just one shot behind leaders Brett Rumford and Mark Foster.
Herbert birdied all four of the par-five holes and added a fifth birdied at the par-four ninth – his final hole of the day.
Fellow Bendigo pro Andrew Martin played in the ground behind Herbert and shot a three-over par 75. Martin played solidly until his final four holes where he dropped three shots.
Herbert and Martin both have morning tee times on Friday.
