The bombing raids on 19 February 1942 were the most significant and disastrous in Australian history, according to a statement from the Bendigo Darwin Defenders committee.
It was the first time in an enemy attack was launched against Australia on Australian soil.
The then mayor of Darwin J F Burton estimated about 900 people were killed and hundreds more injured.
During the surprise attack eight of the 45 ships in the harbour were sunk and many of the others severely damaged while 23 aircraft were destroyed. Many buildings, including homes, were damaged.
The attacks continued for another two years.
The commemorative service will be held at the Bendigo District RSL Sub-Branch Inc. 73-75 Havilah Road, Bendigo on Sunday the 19th February, 2017 commencing at 9:30am.
