Kangaroo Flat’s midfield stocks have been bolstered by the signing of former North Ballarat VFL player Jonathan Lanyon.
Originally from Boort and a graduate of the Bendigo Pioneers, Lanyon played 13 VFL games for the Roosters and was a key member of East Point’s team in the Ballarat Football League.
Lanyon represented Ballarat at inter-league level and Kangaroo Flat co-coach Corey Greer expects the 22-year-old to be a “top shelf” midfielder in Bendigo.
“He’s a very good player… he’s our main recruit,’’ Greer said on Friday.
“He moved to Bendigo a couple of weeks ago and he’s trained the house down since.
“He’s been really impressive in the way he’s led things at training. He’s going to be a great asset for us and he’s still only young, so he’s got a lot of good footy ahead of him.”
Lanyon’s addition to the midfield group offsets the departure of reigning best and fairest winner Marty Kelly and veteran dup Lance Oswald and Shannon Broadbent.
“We’re in the process of locking down a couple more midfielders. Hopefully, we’ll have that done in the next couple of weeks,’’ Greer said.
The Roos have been hard at it on the training track and Greer has been impressed with the results.
“It’s probably one of the hardest pre-seasons I’ve completed in my time at the club,’’ the star midfielder said.
“I’m sure all the boys would vouch for that, but at the same time it’s been enjoyable.
“You can see the improvement in a lot of players. There’s guys who have been in and out of the seniors in recent years that have improved dramatically this pre-season that look ready to play senior footy regularly this year.”
Greer has also been buoyed by the increase in depth in the Roos younger players.
“We’ve struggled in the under-18s in the past few years, but this year we have good numbers and there’s some good talent there as well,’’ he said.
“The under-18s will be far more competitive this year… it’s a good sign for the club.”
The Roos will play practice matches against Kerang, Nyah and White Hills ahead of their BFNL season opener against Golden Square on Good Friday.
