The two thieves were caught on CCTV searching through Matthew Kaess’ car in the early hours of Saturday.
“They were just wondering up the street, one of them had a glove on,” Mr Kaess said.
“Nothing was really taken, just an iPod. But the funny part is there was $7-8 in gold coins sitting next to it and they left all of that.”
Mr Kaess, who lives in the vicinity of Wendouree Parade and Mill Street, said he used his CCTV to report the matter to police.
“(CCTV footage) really came into play when Christian Ashby was (allegedly) hit last year. That got me thinking about it,” he said.
“If you can afford it, it definitely helps the police.
“Nothing is minor, let the police know … it might be another part of the puzzle.”
He is now urging other Ballarat residents to stay vigilant and lock-up their cars and homes.
“This kind of stuff seems to be happening so much more. You just have to be careful,” he said.
“It was that one time I forgot to lock the car.
“Make sure your car is locked and don’t leave any significant valuables in it.”
Police are currently investigating the theft.
Ballarat Police Acting Sergeant Scott McLoughlin said Saturday morning’s theft was one of 13 reported to police over the previous three days.
He said a number of burglaries and other crimes were also reported.
“Ballarat police urge residents to be vigilant and not leave belongings around to help minimise offenders taking advantage of it,” he said.
