This is a timeline of what we know so far:
WEDNESDAY
2.45pm: A guard is attacked and has security pass stolen, about 30 inmates riot and 15 escape, a fence is rammed with a stolen ute
3pm: Six teenagers are arrested at Lockwood, near Bendigo, while nine remain on the run, some in three carjacked vehicles
3.30pm: A police car and then a civilian car are reportedly rammed
3.45pm: Police call off a high-speed chase after allegedly stolen car drives the wrong way down the Calder Freeway.
4pm: Five youths on the roof of the centre agree to come down. Police lose track of stolen cars.
6.45pm: Two more escapees arrested, reportedly found wandering shirtless in a paddock near the centre.
7pm: About 50 staff released after four hours of lockdown
8pm: Police secure the Malmsbury facility, with seven still on the run.
11.40pm: A white Suzuki SUV, which several escapees had been travelling in, is involved in a collision with another vehicle and dumped at the intersection of Springvale and Wellington roads in Mulgrave.
THURSDAY
7am: Police confirm seven teenagers remain on the run. Police seeking information on a blue Ford falcon sedan, with registration ZKV598.
Members of the community are urged to call triple zero if they have any information and to avoid contact with the escapees.
8am: Four escapees arrested in Ashburton, near Malvern. Another three escapees are still on the run.
