It is undoubtedly one of the most social times of the year, as we put the busy Christmas period behind us and prepare to welcome in the new year in a more relaxed style.
What of course makes it such a time of celebration is the promise a new date on the calendar provides.
There are always those resolutions that can be so hard to keep, but undoubtedly there are the possibilities involved in striving for and achieving our goals.
For most, it can be something as simple and humble as good health, for ourselves but especially our loved ones and friends.
And so getting excited about catching up and celebrating the arrival of 2017 is very much all about our hopes and dreams for those we care about.
It does not matter whether the previous year has been a good or bad one. If you have lost someone it might be a way of drawing a line under the grief – never forgetting, but hoping the pain is eased and using their memory to help you move forward to happier times.
Once again there will be no shortage of ways to celebrate when the clock strikes 12 tonight.
Many people will stay at home, content to be with family or with their wider circle of friends.
For others, it will be about heading out to enjoy themselves at pubs or clubs.
Near the top of that list would be the two firework shows at Rosalind Park. With the first fireworks launched at 9.15pm, the event is clearly aimed at families so young ones will get to see the spectacular for themselves.
For the more robust revellers, a second display will be set off at midnight as a fitting way to usher in 2017.
However, if fireworks are not your thing, many of Bendigo’s eclectic array of restaurants, pubs and clubs are also holding events, meaning people will have plenty of ways to celebrate.
But as is said every year, revellers should take care that they don’t over-indulge on alcohol and make sure they look out for each other.
There were too many tragic deaths in 2016 and no one wants to start the new year with the pall of tragedy hanging over the city.
We wish our readers all the best for a safe and happy new year.
