Damian Gray, 26, had his bid for bail in the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court denied on Wednesday, charged with aggravated burglary and other offences.
Gray allegedly entered an unlocked house in Kennington overnight between November 20 and 21, stealing car keys and a wallet from a table near the front door.
He allegedly stole a Ford Territory from in front of the house, and reversed into a fence and water meter while trying to flee the area.
A motorcycle was also stolen from the house, but Gray was not charged with the offence. He told police another person came to the house with him with the intention of trading the vehicles for ice.
Gray allegedly used a credit card in the wallet to make $75 in purchases from Apco Kangaroo Flat on the same night, before the two traveled to another area to purchase drugs.
Gray lost sight of the motorcycle and dumped the stolen vehicle at Harry Trott Oval in Kennington where it was recovered the next morning, the court heard.
He told police he was “drunk and vulnerable” on the night, and “just went along with it”. He did not know the identity of the other person.
Gray also allegedly stole $300 worth of meat from Coles Bendigo East, and was involved in an attempted break-in of Liquorland on McIvor Road.
The court heard Gray was consuming three points of ice per day, and it “appears he was stealing things from houses to keep his habit going.”
Defence counsel Kate Youngson said Gray has an intellectual disability and was easily lead on by others.
“The word ‘vulnerable’ has been used many times in this proceeding. In both summaries, he was in the company of someone else,” she said.
Magistrate Peter Mithen said a jail term was likely for the alleged offending.
Gray will next appear in court on January 30.
