UPDATE 11.30am: Specialist detectives from Melbourne arrived on the scene a short time ago to continue investigations into the incident at Derwent Drive, Long Gully last night.
UPDATE 9.30am: A crime scene has been set up at the house and parts of Derwent Drive are blocked by police tape.
Crime squads from Melbourne are en route to the scene and police are pursuing inquiries to identify possible suspects.
Other occupants of the home were present at the time of the incident, police said, and will be offered counselling.
The man remains in a critical condition at The Alfred hospital.
EARLIER: Police are investigating after a 45-year-old man suffered life-threatening burns to 90 per cent of his body in a fire overnight.
Emergency services were called to a home in Derwent Drive, Long Gully, just before midnight where there was a fire on the back verandah.
The man was treated at the scene and initially taken to Bendigo Health in a serious condition.
He was then flown to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne in a critical condition, a spokesperson from Ambulance Victoria said.
Three Bendigo CFA units attended the fire which also caused minor damage to the rear of the house.
Police investigations are ongoing.
