Police will be freed up to attend the most urgent incidents following the establishment of a new 24-hour police assistance phone line to deal with non-emergency calls.

Currently 30 per cent of calls to police are not urgent, so the establishment of the line is hoped to better assess which incidents need a quick response.
The line has worked effectively in other states, chief commissioner Graham Ashton said on Wednesday morning.
Officials hope that it will work similarly to the nurse-on-call hotline that deals with non-critical health inquiries.
The hotline could assist, for example, people who have come home from holidays to a burgled home, Mr Ashton said.
Rather than police being dispatched to talk people through a process that isn't pressing, officers on the phone will be able to talk to the homeowner about what will happen and when a crime scene team will visit.
Premier Daniel Andrews said Victorians would be able to ring the hotline at any time of day and speak to a police officer.
"It is also about managing demand to triple zero," Mr Andrews said. "This is about giving people another option."
Labor has been under pressure to deal with rising crime rates and community fears about safety.
On Wednesday, Mr Ashton joined Premier Andrews and Police Association secretary Ron Iddles to launch the state's first community safety statement which summarised the Andrews' government recent law and order strategy, which includes $2 billion to recruit 2729 extra police.
Officers will be given the power to obtain DNA samples from suspects in indictable offences without court approval.
Mr Andrews also outlined new laws to ban cash sales for scrap metal to crack down on organised crime and automatic number plate-recognition technology for 220 police vehicles, which will allow scanning of 2500 number plates an hour.
Victoria is also buying three new police helicopters and a fixed-wing aircraft.
Mr Iddles said the document was "not spin" and called for bipartisan support towards tackling crime.
Shadow minister Edward O'Donohue said Labor had copied five law and order policies from the Coalition, including 'no body, no parole' and keeping police killers behind bars.
"Good ideas should be above partisan politics so it is a good thing that Daniel Andrews has now copied some of our law and order policies," Mr O'Donohue said.
"There remain many problems with Daniel Andrews' approach to law and order and the Liberal Nationals are committed to working constructively with Daniel Andrews on new ideas to make Victoria safe again."
