Christmas is only six weeks away and while that might be reason for many to celebrate, some Bendigonians are preparing for what can be the loneliest time of the year.

But for those without friends and family nearby this festive season, and for those who have fallen on hard times, members of the Bendigo community are pitching in to spread some Christmas cheer.
A lunch at the All Seasons Hotel on 25 December will offer hundreds of people the chance to spend Christmas Day celebrating with their community.
Now in its third year, the function was an initiative of All Seasons Hotel owners Tom and Jeanine Hedley, who have promised guests all the traditional yuletide trimmings.
The event will be staffed by volunteers keen to lend a hand on their holidays.
Mayor Margaret O’Rourke, who usually spent the day at home with her extended family, would attend this year’s event with her loved ones.
“I love Christmas because it is a nice, relaxing time, but a lot of people do not have that luxury,” Cr O’Rourke said.
“There’s people who are struggling and there’s pockets of disadvantage in our society.
“It’s about extending a hand to those who need it.”
Although Bendigo’s new council had only met once, Cr O’Rourke said there was already a focus on inclusiveness for all the city’s residents.
She congratulated businesses and members of the public who were also committed to helping neighbours in need.
