The internationally famous artist has forged a collaboration with the gallery to display his new works.
With 11 of his thought-provoking photographs unveiled last night, it marks the start of a major exhibition that will borrow from several European institutions.
Over the next 12 months, the gallery will have five major international exhibits.
Collaborations are already under way with the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and British Museum.
Bendigo Art Gallery director Karen Quinlan said the exhibitions, including more Bill Henson works, were tightly under wraps.
But she said there would be more international works that would attract just as much interest as the Grace Kelly: Style Icon exhibit.
If it generates anything close to the 135,000 visitors that came to see Grace Kelly it will be a huge success.
Ms Quinlan described Bill Henson’s latest display as “the representation of the human body now and in the past”.
It’s certainly a striking display and will attract people to find their own representations in his work.
For Bendigo it represents more opportunities as a tourism drawcard and an exhibit that underlines Bendigo Art Gallery as one of the leading regional galleries in Australia.
