The man who owns the record for the highest individual score in Test cricket will be the guest speaker at a Golden Square Football Netball Club function on Sunday, November 27.
Nicknamed “The Prince”, Lara made 11,953 runs in Test cricket at an average of 52.88.
The highlights of his Test career were his two record-breaking innings.
In April, 1994, Lara smashed the England attack to all parts of the St John’s ground in making 375 to break Sir Garfield Sobers’ then world record mark of 365.
Matthew Hayden broke Lara’s mark when he made 380 against Zimbabwe, but Lara returned to the top when he made 400 not out against England in April, 2004.
Lara also holds the record for the highest first-class score.
Two months after making 375 against England in 1994, Lara made 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham in County Cricket. Lara faced 427 balls in that innings and hit 62 fours and 10 sixes.
Lara is the only player to have scored a century, double century, triple century, a quadruple century and a quintuple century in first-class cricket.
He also shares the record for most runs in an over in Test cricket. Lara hit South African spinner Robin Peterson for 28 runs in one over in 2003. Australia’s George Bailey tied that record in 2013.
Lara, 47, retired from Test cricket at the end of 2006. He also played 299 one-day internationals for the West Indies, making 13,086 runs at an average of 40.48, including 19 centuries and a highest score of 169.
It won’t be the first time Lara has been to Bendigo.
The left-hander was a member of the West Indies team that travelled to Bendigo in December, 1992, to play a four-day match against a Victorian team that included Shane Warne, Dean Jones, Merv Hughes, and Damien Fleming.
The match was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of rain.
Less than two weeks after leaving Bendigo, Lara made the cricket world stand up and take notice when he made 277 against Australia in just his fifth Test match.
The Brian Lara function will be held at Strathdale Community Centre from 12.30pm-5pm on November 27.
Tickets are $100, which includes food and beverages. Tables of 10 or individual tickets are available.
Tickets are on sale at Intersport Bicknells in Williamson Street.
