The Bendigo Advertiser was first alerted to the event early yesterday morning when an irate father called to vent his displeasure. In reality it’s the parents of the young people involved in the jelly wrestling who should judge if this event is “right” or “wrong”.
Clearly, the father who contacted the Bendigo Advertiser was very much in the “wrong” camp.
The Universal made a massive error in judgement linking this event with Catholic College Bendigo and Bendigo Senior Secondary College.
No school would ever justify or support jelly wrestling at a nightclub and to promote that was never going to please either education provider.
Both schools were strong in their condemnation of any link to the event yesterday and that was pleasing to see.
Hopefully, this major error in judgement was not a stroke of genius to gain major promotion for the event – that would be poor form.
To link these schools with such an event without gaining their permission was wrong. But whether the proposed jelly-wrestling event itself is wrong is another cause for debate.
Has this event fallen victim to the connotation that if it’s jelly wrestling then it must involve terribly skimpy outfits or nudity? The Universal says – and photographic evidence from its Facebook page proves – participants in its jelly-wrestling events wear shorts and T-shirts.
Could it be that these young teenagers were just out to have a bit of “not so clean” but “perfectly responsible” fun? If all the participants are over 18, act properly and the event is well policed, what’s the harm? The beer pong event, well, that’s another story.?
