This week is Mental Health Week and local health advocates hoped a few hours of Tai Chi lessons, giant lawn games and healthy food would help reduce the stigma around mental health and give people new skills.
Aftercare’s Simon Leyley said the Food + Mood event was all about showing people ways to manage their mental health.
“The hope is that people can learn something they can take away and use in their lives every day,” he said.
Mr Leyley said it did not take long for people to check in with themselves.
“Whether than is taking five minutes to go for a walk and de-stress, doing Tai Chi or whatever else, we want people to take away some skills that are easy to use on their lunch breaks,” he said.
Linda Price was one of the people taking part in the Tai Chi class.
“I’ve done Tai Chi before. The breathing element of it is the best part. You close your eyes and just concentrate on breathing evenly,” she said.
Mr Leyley said one in four people would experience a mental issue.
“So it is an issue and you know it will be around, either because it affects you or someone in your family.
