About one in five Australians a year will experience a mental illness.
Depression and anxiety have been part of Kellie Mennen’s life for the past 15 years.
She believes practicing yoga has changed her life for the better.
“Yoga isn’t about being the most flexible, it’s about reconnecting to my body and getting out of my busy mind,” she said.
“It’s like a holiday for my brain. I know mental health is an ongoing journey, I am blessed and grateful to have found a balance of work, exercise and yoga to keep myself well.”
The studio she attends, Vitality Yoga Bendigo, held a free come-and-try class to mark World Mental Health Day on October 10.
The day is intended to promote mental health education, awareness and advocacy.
Mental Health Australia encouraged people to make a mental health promise to mark the occasion.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was among those to make a pledge.
“My mental health promise is to always take the time to ask R U OK and be relentless in our efforts to address mental illness and prevent suicide and self harm,” his pledge said.
