Every week, Y Service Club of Bendigo volunteers sort through the newly donated books and arrange them into their sprawling library.
Twice a year, that library is opened to the public to hunt down their literary gems.
And Spring Book Sale coordinator Colin Lambie said the Y Service often received genuine literary treasures.
“We had someone donate some old bibles that contained original Pro Hart paintings,” Mr Lambie said.
“They sold for $900.”
While prices this long weekend range between $3 and $5, Mr Lambie said he had no doubt there were more hidden treasures among the tens of thousands of books for sale.
The fair will be held from 9am to 5pm on Friday and Saturday and 9am to 3pm on Sunday at the Tom Tweed Stadium on Mundy Street.
All proceeds go to non-profits including the Bendigo YMCA, Bendigo Foodshare, the Discovery Science and Technology Centre, the Bendigo Youth Choir and the CFA and SES.
