STUDENTS at a local school have been urged to speak up about struggles they might be facing in a bid to combat the stigma surrounding mental illness.
Bendigo South East College students heard from LIVIN co-founder Sam Webb about suicide prevention and mental health in an event organised by the school’s student representative council.
Mr Webb founded LIVIN, an awareness-raising organisation with the motto “It ain’t weak to speak”, with Casey Lyons three years ago after their good friend Dwayne Lally ended his own life.
College vice-captain Zahlia Burrill-Grinton said that by holding the event, they hoped to help remove the stigma of mental illness and encourage kids to talk about their problems and seek help.
Captain Amy Bilkey said they wanted to link the event in with the student support centre, where students could get assistance and advice with such issues.
The school is marking its own mental health week this week, coinciding with R U OK? Day on Thursday and World Suicide Prevention Day on Saturday.
Vice-captain Olivia Tangey said there would also a fundraising barbecue and other activities.
If you are in urgent need of assistance for a mental health issue, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, or talk to someone you trust.
