Theunissen also won the Ward Trophy – the players’ player award.
South African born Theunissen joined the Miners in 2015 and was a core member of a dominant forward pack in the premiership winning team, playing at prop forward. With the transfer of Elton Tuitupou to Brisbane in 2016, Theunissen shifted to hooker where he adapted quickly.
“Blake was an inspirational member of the forward pack in 2016. His mobility around the paddock combined with an extremely high work rate made him an outstanding candidate for the best player award,” Bendigo coach Paula Maka said.
Other award winners were: Runner-up best player – Phil Keech. Most consistent – Ryan Spedding. Best new player – Ricky Taylor. Most improved – Iliesa Sevudredre. Best clubman – David McDonald. Most points – Jesse Tuitupou. Most tries – Jesse Tuitupou.
