Census 2016: Malcolm Turnbull finds census 'easy' as website crashes

Australians might have been pulling their hair out in frustration as they tried to access the census on Tuesday night, but their Prime Minister had no such difficulty.

Malcolm Turnbull proudly announced via Twitter at 7.17pm that he had completed the form online, adding that it was "[very] easy to do".

His fellow citizens did not respond lightly, with many taking to Twitter to vent their anger.

"Several million of the rest of us [are] not so smug," one user wrote.

Another said: "It's sometimes worth waiting a little while before hitting the send/tweet button."

Yet others sought to take advantage of the PM's fortune and speedy internet connection - one person asked if he could tweet his answers to Mr Turnbull for him to fill out, while others wanted to go around to his Point Piper mansion to complete it.

A select few pointed out that Mr Turnbull must have filled out his form before the site crashed.

Others used the opportunity to take a shot at the National Broadband Network.

"It might have gone a lot better if we had a proper NBN with fibre to the home," wrote one user.

"I'll do mine right after the #NBN arrives at my house. Fair deal?" wrote another.

Robert Hard said: "Bet the government are wishing they'd spent money on the NBN and bringing Australia into first world internet capability now. What an epic fail!"

Fairfax Media was flooded with emails from exasperated readers unable to fill their forms.

Many tried for hours, concerned they would be fined if they did not lodge their form on Tuesday night. (In fact, people have until September 23 to complete the census.)

"Census nightmare. Seriously what a joke and waste of my time," wrote Jennifer Anderson. "I have been trying for 30 mins to log in and keep getting this same message."

Others weren't even afforded the courtesy of an error message.

"Enter URL ... blue line crawls across the top then stops ... NOTHING???" one Fairfax reader said.

Some were able to fill in the majority of the census, only for the website to crash before they had a chance to submit it.

Richard Brookes said he received an error message while trying to submit the form. "Now I can't even save my progress as I get another error message. Infuriating," he said.

Meanwhile Vicky Gemmell turned her frustration into poetry.

"Raising fists at useless gits," she rhymed.

"Their software's shite. What a waste of my night."

Martin Kelly said anyone with any computer knowledge would have predicted there would be "MAJOR issues".

Another Fairfax reader, Kim Huynh, suggested the ABS take notes from the magazine that published Kim Kardashian's "break the internet" butt pics and received more than 30 million unique visitors in a few days without any difficulty.

Despite the frustration, many people were able to make light of the situation.
