The poppet head will be lit in green and gold for the duration of the Olympic Games, which start on Friday, in honour of the Australian team.
Central Deborah Gold Mine manager Karl Penrose wants people to take a selfie with the lit up poppet head in the background and share it on social media with the hashtag #FanUpAUS #Bendigo.
“We have just installed a brand new lighting system for the poppet head and thought that wishing our Australian team luck at the Olympics was a wonderful way to launch this new feature,” Mr Penrose said.
“The fact that one of the team colours is gold made it even more perfect.”
The lights are also intended to raise the profile of the gold mine.
Bendigo Heritage Attractions acting chief executive officer Wayne Gregson hoped they would make locals more aware of the role tourism plays in the Bendigo economy.
“Often people forget about the experiences that are available to them in their own back yard,” he said.
About 36,000 people visited the Central Deborah Gold Mine in the past financial year.
Mr Gregson said not-for-profit organisations could contact Bendigo Heritage Attractions if they were interested in lighting the poppet head in the colours of their cause.
