Investigators have been told a Toyota sedan was travelling north along the Calder Highway about 3.55pm yesterday.
The car left the roadway and crashed into a tree.
Emergency services attended the scene and the driver of the car, a 74-year-old Charlton woman, was taken to hospital suffering life threatening injuries.
The woman died in hospital and anyone who witnessed the crash or has further information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The fatality brings Victoria’s road toll to 171 this year, already higher than the 148 people who lost their lives on the state’s roads last year.
