And that’s the way coach Luke Beattie wants to keep it.
The Tigers can take a giant step towards a return to the finals for the second year in a row with a win over Eaglehawk at Canterbury Park – a venue they haven’t triumphed at since 2003 – on Saturday.
It’s the classic eight-point game. A win would move the Tigers two games clear of the sixth-placed Hawks.
However, a loss would most likely send the Tigers tumbling out of the top five and elevate the Hawks.
“The main thing for us is that our journey is still well and truly in our hands and that’s what we’re aiming to maintain,” Beattie said.
“For whoever loses on Saturday, it’s going to become more challenging for that team to get a spot in the finals, so we really need to make sure we cement our position in the top five.”
Kyneton has won its past three games, while the resurgent Hawks have won four on the trot.
