Say no to cruelty by saying no to eggs
The gruesome maceration of millions of day old male chicks by the egg industry is something few consumers are aware of, yet if we buy commercially produced eggs, including free range, we are complicit in this cruelty (“Renewed pressure on Big Egg to stop violently killing 'useless' male chicks”, July 19).

As Animal Liberation campaign director Emma Hurst said in the article, we would never dream of dropping a live chick into a blender yet this is what we do if we buy eggs from the store.
The only difference is, we pay someone else to do it on our behalf.
Even if we reach the stage where male embryos can be identified during incubation, commercially produced eggs will still be derived by cruelty because the hens will still be killed when their egg production declines – and chicken slaughter is brutal and terrifying.
Shackled by their ankles to a conveyor belt the frantic and struggling birds who avoid the stun bath and automated knife die an agonizing death in the scalding tank.
What right do we have to subject any bird to this horrific suffering simply because we enjoy the taste of their eggs?
Say no to cruelty by saying no to eggs.

Lest We Forget
Britain votes to Exit Europe, but for tens of thousands of Brits sent to Europe 100 years ago, they will, forever, remain part of Europe.

Ban the green bin
I have to wonder at the motives of the Bendigo council and the green bin fiasco, this is in my opinion very suspect and will impact on pensioners already struggling to pay rates.
Another point is the health angle and smell. Also the problem with soiled napkins that will end up in the bins – who will monitor that?
Just another money grab by the City of Greater Bendigo.

Are they really my enemy?
Recently a friend was told she could not sit her tired three-year-old on a bench at a bus stop.
The fellow bus stop lady needed the space for her handbag.
My proud Australian friend, who is of middle Eastern appearance, recognised the attitude, but did not confront the behaviour of the woman, who was obviously motivated by racial stereotyping.
Instead she demonstrated quiet grace.
Fellow Bendigonians when will you stop allowing yourselves to be led like political sheep?
Separate the individual out from the issue before we lose our heart!
We are better than this!
Don't loose your soul to the propaganda.
Remember history, and the danger of snap judgements based on here-say.
Don't let mob rule determine our capacity for basic compassion.
Please look someone in the eye and ask yourself "are they really my enemy?"
