THE company that operates some of Bendigo’s most famous tourist sites has announced its new chief executive officer.
Peter Abbott has been appointed to the top position at Bendigo Heritage Attractions following the departure of Ian Hart, who left for a role with Regional Development Australia.
“I have a strong passion for heritage tourism and I’ve always admired Bendigo’s approach to its heritage, (which is) such a strong, rich heritage,” Mr Abbott said.
Bendigo Heritage Attractions operates the Central Deborah Gold Mine, Bendigo Tramways and the Joss House Temple, and also oversees the Bendigo gasworks and Victoria Hill sites.
Mr Abbott said it was an “exciting time” for the organisation and he hoped he could further develop the city’s tourism industry alongside its heritage assets.
He said he wanted to collaborate with other tourist attractions, accommodation providers, restaurants and other businesses in Bendigo to promote the city as a tourist destination for the benefit of all.
“Any opportunity to promote the assets of this town I’ll seize with both hands and give it a fair shake,” he said.
Mr Abbott said he would also work with the Bendigo Heritage Attractions board on shaping the company’s future direction.
Bendigo Heritage Attractions chairman David Wright said Mr Abbott’s skills and experience were well-matched to the position left vacant in mid-June by Mr Hart, who he praised for his “wonderful work” in the 18 months he was in the role.
“We’re confident Peter will have a long and hugely fulfilling career here as our new CEO,” Mr Wright said.
About a dozen applications were received for the position, from as far away as New Zealand.
Mr Abbott will likely start his new job in late August or early September, taking the reins from acting CEO Wayne Gregson.
Mr Abbott will be leaving his position as manager for tourism services at Warrnambool City Council, which he has held for nine years.
In that role, he has overseen the operations of the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village and the Surfside Holiday Park.
Mr Abbott has also been managing the Middle Island Maremma Project, the focus of the 2015 movie Oddball, for which he acted as liaison during its planning and making, and that of an accompanying documentary.
